Edwin Díaz Transferred To 60-Day Injured List As Dodgers Add New Relief Pitcher

As part of the Los Angeles Dodgers looking to add a fresh arm to their bullpen on Sunday in the form of Wyatt Mills, they optioned Paul Gervase back to Triple-A Oklahoma City and also transferred Edwin Díaz to the 60-day injured list.

Moving Díaz to the 60-day IL made room for Mills to join the Dodgers’ 40-man roster that still remains full. Díaz is the second player in as many days the Dodgers have made such a roster move with, following their doing so with Tommy Edman as a corresponding move to claiming Charlie Barnes off waivers from the Chicago Cubs.

The Dodgers will need to free up a spot in two weeks when Kiké Hernández is expected to be activated on May 25.

Why is Edwin Díaz on 60-day injured list?

The Dodgers first lost Díaz to the 15-day IL on April 20 due to right elbow loose bodies. That was followed by news of the 32-year-old needing to undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove the floating bodies from his throwing elbow.

Díaz nor the Dodgers have provided a detailed timetable for his return, but it’s not projected to come until some point in the second half of the season. Thus, transferring Díaz to the 60-day injured list seemingly doesn’t have any impact.

All it cements is Díaz now is not technically eligible to be activated until June 19. Of course, he wasn’t going to return before then anyhow.

Díaz had right elbow surgery April 22 and nearly immediately was feeling the benefit of no longer having the loose bodies present.

“Everything went well. I had, like, five loose bodies in my elbow. Everything went well and I’m feeling really good right now,” he said a handful of days after the operation.

Díaz already was encouraged by his range of motion and said with “100%” certainty he would get back to his dominant self.

“I think that was the best case, to remove them now and be ready for the second half of the season,” Díaz added. “I wasn’t that worried because I was feeling good. I was telling them if I can, I can keep throwing. But my doesn’t feel good. I feel tired.

“So the decision was to take the loose bodies out, rehab and be ready for the second half.”
