The Los Angeles Dodgers were unable to reach an agreement with 20th-round pick Shane Brinham, who has decided to play collegiate baseball at University of Michigan instead of signing a professional contract.
Brinham announced his plans to follow through on a commitment to play for Michigan in a post on social media.
Brinham is a Canadian left-handed pitcher from North Vancouver, British Columbia, and was the third and final high school player selected by the Dodgers in the 2025 MLB Draft. Among high schoolers, Brinham was ranked by Perfect Game at No. 456 overall and No. 51 among left-handed pitchers in the class of 2025.
As a 20th-round selection there was no slot value assigned to Brinham, but any pick after the 10th round can be offered a maximum of $150,000 before it counts against a team’s bonus pool. It would have taken an over-slot offer to sign Brinham, given that he had more to gain from developing in college with Michigan rather than signing for $150,000.

The Dodgers ranked 24th among all teams with a bonus pool of $9,031,300 for their 2025 MLB Draft picks. Bonus pools are calculated by adding the slot values of every pick through the first 10 rounds.
They did end up going over the $150,000 limit for 17th-round pick Sam Horn, who had signability concerns because of his commitment to continue playing football at the University of Missouri. L.A. offered Horn $347,500 over the limit and allowed him to continue playing at Missouri this fall in order to convince him to sign.
The Dodgers also went over slot to sign their fourth-round pick Aidan West, who was their first prep selection in this year’s draft. With a slot value of $544,900, the Dodgers went more than $700,000 over slot for West.
Dodgers sign some prep picks from 2025 Draft Class
The Dodgers’ sixth-round selection Mason Ligenza is a high school outfielder from Pennsylvania and was taken one pick after West during this year’s Draft.
Ligenza decided to forgo signing and will fulfill his commitment to playing collegiate baseball at the University of Pittsburgh.
The slot value for the Dodgers to sign Ligenza was $317,200, but he was likely seeking an over-slot offer similar to the one West received.
