The Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2025 draft class featured several intriguing selections, including Sam Horn, who was taken out of the University of Missouri.
Horn was drafted by the Dodgers in the 17th round and received a $497,500 signing bonus. Any pick made after the 10th round can be signed for a maximum of $150,000 before it counts against a team’s bonus pool.
The Dodgers not only offered Horn $347,500 over that threshold, but allowed him to continue playing football at the University of Missouri this fall as part of their agreement.
He was part of a quarterback battle that carried into Mizzou’s season opener, that for Horn ended immediately due to an apparent right leg injury on his first play.
According to Cody Goodwin of PowerMizzou.com, Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz did not provide details of Horn’s injury, only to say that he is going to miss a significant portion of the season:
“Sam has an injury that’s going to keep him out for an extended period of time,” Drinkwitz said. “I’m not going to get into specifics.”
Horn laid on the ground before being helped by the trainers to the medical tent and locker room after suffering his injury. He did not return to the game, and afterward Horn was spotted wearing a full-leg cast and using crutches.
Horn underwent an MRI in the ensuing days, though details of the results were not made public.
Horn was in a competition for the Tigers’ starting quarterback job, and that extended into the first game of their season. Horn was expected to split time with Beau Pribula in the Tigers’ season-opener on Thursday.
Unfortunately for Horn, his opportunity ended just as it began. On Horn’s first play, he ran a designed quarterback draw that resulted in an injury to his knee.
Horn is a dual-sport athlete who injured his elbow in February 2023 and eventually underwent Tommy John surgery that cost him all of 2024. In his return to the mound this past April, Horn struck out 14 batters in 10.2 innings.
Horn went 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 15.0 innings across parts of two seasons as a pitcher for the Tigers.
Sam Horn’s quarterback history
Horn appeared in four games for Mizzou from 2022-2023 but attempted only eight passes while serving as their backup quarterback.
He missed all of 2024 while recovering from the aforementioned Tommy John surgery. Horn went into this fall competing with Beau Pribula, who transferred from Penn State, to be the starting QB for Missouri.
