When the Los Angeles Dodgers placed Tyler Glasnow on the 15-day injured list in April, there were several comments from manager Dave Roberts, pitching coach Mark Prior and the right-hander himself about being frustrated over the shoulder trouble and the confusion that accompanied it.
Roberts and Prior both intimated Glasnow was mainly dealing with some discomfort and lack of feel amid a goal to keep his refined mechanics that were implemented during the offseason. Glasnow wound up spending 10 weeks on the injured list before he returned from an official designation of right shoulder inflammation.
Upon welcoming the 31-year-old back into the rotation, Roberts expressed a hope that Glasnow would allow his athleticism and talent to shine rather than reverting back to becoming consumed with his delivery.
Glasnow responded by allowing just one run over 11 innings pitched through his first two starts back, both of which came against the red-hot Milwaukee Brewers who swept their season series against the Dodgers.
“Tyler looks good. I like where his delivery is at, I like where his head is at,” Roberts said as Glasnow now is due to face the Minnesota Twins.
“He’s in a really good spot. I think that he’s really focused. Certainly, very helpful having him back. There’s a lot of clarity going on right now with Tyler. And I know that the last year, there’s been a lot of uncertainty, but right now, he’s as clear of mind as I’ve seen in a long time. So I feel really good where he’s at.”
Roberts further added that Glasnow and Dodgers coaches are in lockstep, which is further aiding him on the mound.
“I think that when a guy is not healthy, when he’s not right with his delivery, all that stuff bleeds into kind of not being on the same page,” Roberts said. “But I think that from the medical staff, the performance, the pitching guys, we’re all kind of synced up right now, and I think his performance has shown that, which is great.”
Tyler Glasnow working ‘fine line’
After a second consecutive impressive performance against the Brewers, Glasnow acknowledged there is a bit of a balance on the mental side.
“I think it’s a fine line, I guess,” Glasnow said of thinking about mechanics compared to results in a given outing.
“It’s not turn it off completely, but I think when I’m feeling bad, I resort more to, ‘Alright, how do we fix this?’ As opposed to being, ‘This is what I’ve got today. Let’s just go get it.’ I think a lot of that was due to the changes.
“I’m just in a better position right now to go out and be athletic.”
