The Los Angeles Dodgers are National League West champions for the fourth year in a row and 12th time in the past 13 seasons.
Prior to their division-clinching shutout win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Dodgers had already punched their ticket for October baseball. This fall marks a 13th consecutive year the Dodgers are in the playoffs.
It’s the longest active MLB postseason streak and tied with the New York Yankees (1995-2007) for second all-time. The Atlanta Braves hold the longest postseason streak in MLB history at 14 seasons in a row from 1991-2005.
“You know what, I guess the easy answer is they’re all different,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of the team’s string of NL West titles.
“But looking at the path, this is as tough of a path that we’ve been through. But the old adage, iron sharpens iron, I do think we’re better for all the adversity and I think we’re playing our best baseball. Just to see our players and coaches celebrate today but understand there’s a lot of baseball left, is a good feeling.”
Earlier this year the Dodgers tied an NL record with their 15th consecutive winning season.
Furthermore, their victory on Thursday was the Dodgers’ 90th win of the season. That extended their streak to 12 consecutive full seasons of at least 90 wins.
The last time the Dodgers did not reach a minimum of 90 wins in a full schedule was 2012, when they won just 86 games. From 2005-2012, the Dodgers won 90 or more games just once, which came during the 2009 season when they reached 95.
The only season the Dodgers didn’t win 90 games during their 13-year postseason streak came in the shortened 2020 campaign when they went 43-17. That translated to a franchise-best .716 winning percentage and equated to to a 116-win pace for a full season.
What’s next for Dodgers after clinching NL West
Finish regular season
The Dodgers still have three games remaining on their 2025 schedule in the form of a weekend series against the Seattle Mariners, who won the American League West. The Mariners also clinched a first-round postseason bye and thus don’t have anything at stake.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said the team would stick to their pitching plan — Emmet Sheehan, Tyler Glasnow and Clayton Kershaw — regardless of whether or not they arrived in Seattle already as NL West champions.
Who are Dodgers playing in Wild Card Series?
While the Dodgers are locked into the No. 3 seed in the playoff bracket, it’s not yet clear who their opponent will be in the Wild Card Series at Dodger Stadium next week.
They currently are lined up to face the New York Mets, who are ahead of the Cincinnati Reds and control their own destiny.
However it unfolds, the Dodgers face a new challenge in that they did not earn a first-round bye and now begin their postseason run with a best-of-three series.
“You know what, I honestly don’t care. I don’t care where we play, I don’t care who we play,” Roberts said.
“We’re prepared to play through October. That’s kind of how we’re wired. So whoever we play on Tuesday, we’ll be ready.”
