The Los Angeles Dodgers announced on Wednesday that they have claimed left-handed pitcher Zac Rosscup off of waivers from the Colorado Rockies. As a corresponding move to get him on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated fellow southpaw Edward Paredes for assignment.
The 30-year-old Rosscup was a 28th round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Rays in 2009 and has pitched in the Major Leagues in parts of four seasons.
In 71 career appearances, Rosscup has posted a 5.30 ERA, 4.82 FIP and 1.55 WHIP while striking out 67 and walking 32 in 54.1 innings. He has been dominant against left-handed hitters as southpaws have slashed just .136/.262/.239 against him.
His last big league experience came in 2017 when he split time with the Chicago Cubs and Rockies, giving up nine hits and four runs in 7.2 total innings with 10 strikeouts and zero walks.
He has spent all of this season with Triple-A Albuquerque, although he has only appeared in 10 games to this point. In 8.1 innings, he has posted a 1.08 ERA and .084 WHIP with nine strikeouts and three walks.
With the trade deadline just around the corner, the Dodgers will certainly be looking to bolster their bullpen. Rosscup is one of the few smaller moves that they will make, although if he can get left-handed hitters out at a high level then he could prove to be very valuable for Los Angeles down the stretch, especially with Tony Cingrani out due to injury.
Paredes was given an opportunity to earn that role in recent weeks, although he was not able to take advantage of it.
