The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed reliever Erik Goeddel off waivers from the Seattle Mariners and designated Henry Owens for assignment in order to create room on the 40-man roster, which remains full.
Goeddel, who was designated for assignment by the Mariners earlier this week, is out of Minor League options. He may join the Dodgers in Washington for their weekend series with the Nationals, which would require a corresponding move on the 25-man roster.
The 29-year-old was a 24th round pick of the New York Mets in 2010 out of UCLA and has more than four years of Major League experience as a reliever. In 115 career appearances, Goeddel has yielded a 3.78 ERA, 3.90 FIP and 1.21 WHIP while striking out 118 compared to 43 walks in 112 innings.
After spending the first seven years of his professional career with the Mets, Goeddel signed a Minor League contract with the Texas Rangers this past offseason. He was released during Spring Training and went on to sign a Minor League deal with the Mariners.
Goeddel pitched in five Major League games for the Mariners this season, allowing four hits and one run in 7.1 innings (1.23 ERA), with nine strikeouts and five walks. He also pitched nine shutout innings across nine appearances for Triple-A Tacoma before being called up.
Owens was claimed off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks last December. He’d yet to pitch for any of the Dodgers’ Minor League affiliates this season.
