Dodgers Call Up Charlie Barnes, Option Landon Knack & Transfer Will Smith To 60-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of Charlie Barnes and optioned Landon Knack to Triple-A Oklahoma City. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred Will Smith on the 60-day injured list.

Barnes rejoins the Dodgers for the third time this season. In his last appearance with the club on July 1, he went seven innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits against the Athletics.

He was optioned the following day and then designated for assignment on July 11 when the Dodgers activated Knack from the 60-day IL.

The 30-year-old has been in the Majors parts of two seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2021), Chicago Cubs (2026) and Dodgers (2026), recording an 0-4 mark with a 6.30 ERA in 50 innings.

In six Minor League seasons, he owns a 29-26 record with a 3.97 ERA and 398 strikeouts in 453 innings. He was a fourth-round draft pick by the Minnesota Twins in the 2017 MLB Draft out of the University of Clemson.

Knack pitched two innings in the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, allowing two home runs in the loss. He has thrown five innings this year across two games, giving up five runs on six hits, four of which have gone over the fence.

In three seasons with the Dodgers, the 28-year-old is 6-7 with a 4.33 ERA in 27 games (19 starts). He was drafted by the Dodgers in the second round of the 2020 Draft out of East Tennessee State University.

Will Smith transferred to 60-day IL

Smith is now approaching his seventh week on the injured list due to a neck injury. He was shut down from baseball activities last week as the neck pain continued.

After being placed on the 60-day IL, he is not eligible for activation until Aug. 10. However, the Dodgers did not expect him back before that time anyway.

The Dodgers are counting on Smith to return this season, but they can’t be sure at this point. The earliest possible timeline for Smith’s return is mid-August, and any more setbacks could delay that to September or later if he’s still able to get back on the field.

The 31-year-old is batting .249/.338/.382 with five doubles, six home runs and 23 RBI over 52 games so far this season.
