Dodgers Broadcasters Jaime Jarrín & Charley Steiner Test Positive For COVID-19

The Los Angeles Dodgers begin a season-long 10-game road trip on Friday, but they will be without their broadcast teams for AM 570 L.A. Sports Radio and SportsNet LA after members of the crew tested positive for COVID-19.

“Due to a few members of the Dodgers’ broadcast team having recently tested positive for COVID-19, and out of an abundance of caution, the Dodgers have decided to not travel their broadcasters to upcoming games in Philadelphia and Washington,” the Dodgers announced in a statement.

“Similar to the 2020 and 2021 MLB seasons, the games will be broadcast from Los Angeles.”

While the Dodgers did not say how many members of the crew have the virus, at least two of their broadcasters, Jaime Jarrín and Charley Steiner, tested positive, according to Jack Harris of the L.A. Times:

Multiple Dodgers broadcasters have tested positive for COVID-19, including Spanish-language broadcaster Jaime Jarrín and radio play-by-play voice Charley Steiner.

Their positive tests come as COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise in the United States, with more than 130,000 reported new cases each day since May 15, and roughly 40,000 on May 17 just in California.

The Dodgers’ announcement does suggest they could have their broadcast crews back in action for the four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks that begins at Chase Field on Thursday, May 26, depending on if anyone else within the crews test positive.

Broadcasters were unable to travel during the 2020 and 2021 seasons due to MLB’s health and safety protocols, but the Dodgers and several other teams made a return to normalcy this year.

Dodgers clubhouse symptom-free

The Dodgers have so far avoided any more positive tests since David Price and Mitch White both went on the COVID-19 injured list, and the clubhouse is currently symptom-free.

“No, no there’s no symptoms in the clubhouse,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said on Wednesday. “I think that as far as the upstairs, as an organization, we’re all just trying to be very cautious. But as far as in the clubhouse, coaches, training stuff, nothing like that, no.”

The Dodgers’ clubhouse was closed off to media following the night game on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. It marked the first time this season that media was barred from the clubhouse.
