Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Rick Monday was recognized on the field prior to Saturday’s game at Camelback Ranch and received his plaque for being part of the Cactus League Hall of Fame class for 2024.
The group of 2024 Cactus League Hall of Fame inductees also includes Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy, renowned Chicago restaurateur Don Carson, longtime Oakland Athletics employee Steve Vucinich and former Chicago Cubs third baseman Ron Santo.
“Congratulations to the members of the 2024 Cactus League Hall of Fame class,” Cactus League executive director Bridget Binsbacher said in a statement. “The Cactus League Hall of Fame honors those who made outstanding contributions to spring training in Arizona, both on and off the field. Each of these individuals left an indelible mark.”
Monday’s baseball career began as the first pick in the inaugural MLB Draft in 1965 out of the Arizona State University. He played for the Kansas City/Oakland A’s, Cubs and Dodgers, and memorably prevented a United States of America flag from being burned in the outfield at Dodger Stadium.

Monday, a Marine Corps Reserves veteran, sprinted toward the two fans who had come onto the field and snatched the flag away before it could be set ablaze. Monday was playing for the Cubs at the time but received a standing ovation from the Dodger Stadium crowd.
He later endeared himself to Dodgers fans while playing for the team from 1977-1984. Monday’s highlights with the Dodgers include winning the 1981 World Series.
Years into retirement, Monday began his broadcasting career that includes calling Dodgers games for both SportsNet LA and AM 570 L.A. Sports Radio. Monday has been a Dodgers broadcaster since 1993.
