Dodgers Broadcaster Joe Davis Enjoying Opportunity To Call NFL Playoff Games

Along with continuing his work as Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster on SportsNet LA, last season also saw Joe Davis become the lead voice for MLB on Fox. He took over the role when Joe Buck left the network to join ESPN for their Monday Night Football coverage.

The change made Davis the new voice of MLB’s premier events, including the All-Star Game and World Series. It also elevated him to be in position for their coverage of the NFL playoffs.

Davis was in the booth for Super Wild Card Weekend, calling the game between the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers.

During an appearance on “High Heat” with Christopher Russo and Alanna Rizzo, Davis detailed the experience and shared how excited he was to be on the call for his first NFL playoff game, via MLB Network:

“It is what I’ve dreamt of. If you had asked me as a kid what I want to do, I would’ve said, ‘I want to call the World Series. I want to call the biggest games on the biggest networks.’ The NFL stuff, last week was my first NFL playoff game, and man it was incredible.

“In San Francisco, the environment, the fact that everybody is standing an hour before opening kickoff, I’m kind of a crowd junkie, an environment junkie.

“It’s just another level. Regular season is great in the NFL, but it’s just a whole other level when you get into the playoffs. I got to experience that firsthand.”

Next for Davis is calling the divisional round game between the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants reached the next round of the playoffs behind a thrilling road victory over Minnesota Vikings, while the Eagles earned a bye into the NFC divisional game.

Stephen Nelson to fill in for Joe Davis

On Friday the Dodgers announced the hiring of Stephen Nelson for their SportsNet LA broadcast team. Nelson will call more than 50 home and road games during the 2023 season, with his assignments to come when Davis is fulfilling his national role with Fox Sports.
