The Los Angeles Dodgers and L.A. Angels were just over one week away from beginning the exhibition Freeway Series when Major League Baseball cancelled all remaining Spring Training games, but two members of the respective organizations may soon compete.

MLB continues to maintain contact with public health officials as it awaits progress and clearance to resume activities as the world grapples with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The league’s second time pushing back Opening Day was in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommending gatherings of 50 or more people be cancelled at least through May 10. That timeline has MLB beginning its season in June, at the earliest and after completing a second Spring Training.

Though, some within the league reportedly are considering the Fourth of July as an ideal date for Opening Day. The indefinite layoff has left fans, players and broadcasters getting creative to fill the void.

Dodgers broadcaster Joe Davis has used the free time to document his cooking adventures — specifically barbecue, though he recently made pizza. On Sunday, Davis issued a friendly challenge to L.A. Angels All-Star Mike Trout after the latter indicated he would be sharing advice.

Davis has previously offered glimpses into his grilling prowess since taking over as the successor to Vin Scully. However, the demands of a baseball season have limited those to occasional barbecues after a Sunday home game, or a rare off day.

In some of those cases, Davis was joined by Orel Hershiser and his wife. But with social distancing guidelines in place, the two have only been able to connect thus far when hosting interview sessions on the Dodgers’ YouTube channel.

Anyhow, Davis and Trout participating in a friendly competition would be the type of needed distraction from what continues to be a challenging time for all.
