Blake Treinen Makes Progress Toward Starting Rehab Assignment

3 Min Read

The Los Angeles Dodgers fortified their starting rotation with a trade for Tarik Skubal earlier this month and now having welcomed back Blake Snell from the 60-day injured list. Further reinforcement could arrive in the next couple weeks as Tyler Glasnow is in the midst of his rehab assignment.

But injuries remain somewhat of a concern for the bullpen. As it stands the Dodgers are currently without the likes of Ben Casparius, Will Klein Brock Stewart and Blake Treinen. Brusdar Graterol previously was ruled out for the season, and newcomer Kris Bubic is still on the 60-day injured list.

Blake Treinen update

The 60-day IL is also where Treinen now finds himself as he was among multiple corresponding roster moves to Snell getting activated on Tuesday.

“No setback,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of the paper move. “I don’t know when his date to return is, but I just saw him briefly, he’s in good spirits. But no, I don’t think there’s a setback.”

Treinen had been on the 15-day injured list since June 20 and was projected to miss a significant amount of time because of right elbow inflammation.

He faced batters on July 29, did so again Wednesday afternoon and should soon begin a rehab assignment.

“I saw it with my own eyes, and he looked really good,” Roberts said. “Stuff was coming out hot. The stuff was really good. I hope he feels good coming out of it. And for me, just seeing what I’ve seen, I would expect him to go out on an assignment.

“I think that after that, it just sort of determines how he feels, when he comes back to join us.”

When might Blake Treinen return?

Transferring the 38-year-old to the 60-day injured list doesn’t have any impact on Treinen’s timeline other than making Wednesday, Aug. 19, the earliest he can be activated. Though, that already was out of the question given that Treinen hasn’t started a rehab assignment.

The veteran reliever dealt with right forearm tightness last season, which resulted in an extended absence as well. He was eventually transferred to the 60-day IL and ultimately missed just over three months.

Given it is already late in the season, the Dodgers are sure to continue exercising patience in effort to get Treinen back to full health for the playoffs.

Treinen is 4-1 with a 3.52 ERA, 3.49 FIP and 1.35 WHIP in 29 games this season. He’s struck out 9.78 hitters per nine innings while walking 3.91 per nine.
