The New York Yankees played at Dodger Stadium for the first time since 2019, and just like that MLB Players Weekend, they took two of three games from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers had their home series winning streak snapped at five and are now 6-8 all-time against the Yankees at Dodger Stadium during the regular season. The highly-anticipated matchup produced three consecutive sellouts at Dodger Stadium, bringing the Dodgers to 10 capacity crowds thus far on the season.
Dodgers attendance for the series opener on Friday night was announced at 52,534, which gave them their largest home crowd of the season. However, that mark didn’t last long as the Dodgers had an announced attendance of 52,975 on Saturday for a new Dodger Stadium record during the 2023 season.
ESPN Sunday Night Baseball had an announced attendance of 52,816.
“I think it’s great for sports, it’s great for baseball. Two great, storied franchises,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said prior to the series beginning. “It’s not going to lack for star power this weekend on the field and in the stands. I know our guys are excited. It’s one series, but I do think the anticipation, the star power, there’s something special about this weekend.”
Spike Lee, Jon Lovitz, LL Cool J, Magic Johnson, Jimmy Jam, Bryan Cranston and Tinashe were among those on hand during the weekend series. Tinashe sang the national anthem prior to Saturday’s game.
There was a large contingent of Yankees fans on hand at Dodger Stadium through the series, with their strongest presence coming Saturday.
Dodgers attendance tracking to surpass 3 million
Last season the Dodgers set the 2022 MLB record for largest crowd with 53,302 announced attendance on Freddie Freeman bobblehead night at Dodger Stadium.
The initial record for largest crowd to attend any MLB game in 2022 was set when the Dodgers had an announced attendance of 53,165 for Cody Bellinger bobblehead night. That figure surpassed the crowd of 52,518 that attended the 2022 All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium.
Then later in July, Clayton Kershaw bobblehead night helped the Dodgers set a new 2022 single-game attendance record with 53,302 fans, but that fell nearly two weeks later.
Overall this season, Dodgers attendance at Dodger Stadium has reached 1,437,473. The team is on pace to surpass 3 million in attendance for the 10th time in the past 12 seasons to also lead the Majors in that category.
The only exceptions during that span are the pandemic-impacted 2020 season when fans were not permitted and in 2021 because of limited attendance being permitted for a portion of the schedule.
