Tyler Glasnow continued to pitch at a high level for the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, but he again struggled to stay on the field.
Glasnow was limited to just 90.1 innings during the regular season, primarily due to right shoulder inflammation that sidelined him for more than two months. That came after the 32-year-old’s first season with the Dodgers was cut short because of a right elbow sprain.
While Glasnow was able to make his biggest impact during the 2025 playoffs, the Dodgers ideally would like to see him stay healthy over the course of an entire season.
Glasnow revealed that the team asked him to gain weight during the offseason to help improve his durability, via Dylan Hernandez of the California Post:
“They were, like, ‘If you add some more fat, it kind of binds into your tissue a little bit better,’” Glasnow said. “I tried it, and I felt a lot better.”
Glasnow made an effort to eat more meals every day to combat his tendency to naturally lose weight from working out and not eating enough to offset it, while his height also plays into that:
“I lose weight really fast,” Glasnow said. “If I don’t stay on top of it and I don’t weigh myself for like a week, I’ll lose, like, 7 pounds. It’s crazy.”
Glasnow gained roughly 20 pounds and believes he is now equipped to withstand the grueling demands of a 162-game season:
He now walks around at 240-plus pounds, up from his traditional playing weight in the 220s. By one measure, his body fat has increased from 5% to more than 9%.
“I feel good at (a lower) weight,” Glasnow said. “I just think it’s hard to go through a full season like that. It’s good to have some weight to play with.”
It isn’t uncommon for the Dodgers to ask certain players to put on weight to optimize their performance. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Gavin Stone and River Ryan are among the other pitchers who reported to Spring Training at a higher weight.
Glasnow now hopes the changes he made to his diet will lead to improved health this season.
Tyler Glasnow wants to build on adjustments from 2025
In addition to gaining weight, Glasnow wants to build on several mechanical changes he made last year as he enters his third season with the Dodgers.
“I think Connor [McGuiness] and Mark [Prior] gave me so many things,” Glasnow recently said. “Right before the postseason, we made some adjustments with how my hip is lined up. And I think a lot of my issues before that was me trying to find a comfortable feeling with that.
“And so I think working with them, getting that feeling, locking it in the postseason. This whole offseason has just been like business as usual. Stay healthy, don’t change anything, but just kind of solidify what I was doing in the postseason last year.”
