The Los Angeles Dodgers remain in firm control of the National League West, but Sunday’s 6–4 loss to the Miami Marlins again exposed a problem that could follow them into October.

Miami scored four runs in the ninth inning and won on Agustín Ramírez’s pinch-hit, two-run walk-off home run. The Dodgers dropped to 90–59 but still held a 9-game lead over the San Diego Padres. Their division position remains secure. Their bullpen does not.

The New York Yankees, meanwhile, strengthened their hold on the American League’s top wild-card spot with a 2–0 win over the Mets. New York improved to 86–63 and remained four games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.

The Yankees appear likely to enter the playoffs as the top wild card, which would put them on track to host the Boston Red Sox in a best-of-three Wild Card Series. MLB betting options for New York fans will continue to reflect a club with a difficult but manageable path through the American League bracket.

Dodgers Bullpen Blows Another Lead

The Dodgers built a 4–0 lead through four innings Sunday in Miami. Rookie and recent call-up Josue De Paula delivered the biggest hit with a three-run home run in the fourth inning, and Los Angeles appeared set to secure a series victory.

The game changed late.

The Marlins scored twice in the eighth inning to cut the lead in half. Miami then rallied for four runs in the ninth. Ramírez came off the bench and drove a two-run homer to left-center field, ending the game and giving the Marlins a 6–4 win.

The Dodgers controlled the game for most of the afternoon. Their bullpen could not finish it.

Late-inning execution has become the club’s clearest weakness. The Dodgers have enough offense to create separation and enough starting pitching to match nearly any postseason opponent. They have not shown the same consistency when handing a lead to the bullpen.

That concern carries more weight in October. A short postseason series can turn on one bad inning, one misplaced fastball, or one relief appearance that extends too long. The Dodgers cannot assume their lineup or rotation will erase every late collapse.

Los Angeles remains well-positioned to capture the National League West for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons. Its focus now turns to securing one of the National League’s top two seeds and the first-round bye that comes with it. The Milwaukee Brewers held the league’s best record entering Sunday, placing added importance on every remaining Dodgers game.

Trade deadline acquisition Tarik Skubal is scheduled to start Monday against the Cincinnati Reds. He has gone 2–2 with a 2.93 ERA and 48 strikeouts in seven outings since joining the Dodgers in a midseason trade. Skubal gives Los Angeles another frontline starter for October.

The rotation can carry the Dodgers deep into the postseason. The bullpen will determine whether the club converts that advantage into wins.

Yankees Positioned For Wild Card Series

The Yankees took another step toward the postseason Sunday behind Cam Schlittler and a combined three-hit shutout against the Mets.

New York improved to 86–63, keeping a firm grip on the American League’s top wild-card position. Tampa Bay remained 90–59 and held a four-game lead in the American League East, leaving the Yankees with work to do if they hope to overtake the Rays.

New York still has a four-game series against Tampa Bay later this month. That matchup could affect the division race, but the Yankees’ most likely postseason route currently begins with a Wild Card Series at Yankee Stadium.

The Boston Red Sox sat at 82–68 and held the second AL wild-card spot. If the standings remain unchanged, Boston would travel to New York for a best-of-three series.

A Yankees–Red Sox playoff matchup would create immediate pressure for both clubs. The format leaves little margin for error. One poor start, a missed scoring chance, or a bullpen failure can shift the entire series.

The Yankees have the talent to advance. Aaron Judge remains the centerpiece of their lineup, while the pitching staff gives New York a chance to control a short series. The club’s ability to secure the top wild card matters because it would guarantee home-field advantage for all three potential games.

The Yankees do not need to win the American League East to become a serious October threat. Hosting Boston would give them a favorable opening path, though it would also deliver one of baseball’s most demanding rivalry matchups.

Different Paths Toward October

The Dodgers and Yankees remain among the sport’s highest-profile contenders, but they face different tasks over the final two weeks of the regular season.

Los Angeles needs to protect its division lead, chase a first-round bye, and stabilize its bullpen. The Dodgers have already built enough of a cushion over San Diego to avoid a meaningful National League West race, but their late-game issues cannot be ignored.

The Yankees need to maintain their wild-card position while continuing to pressure Tampa Bay. Catching the Rays remains possible, but New York’s clearest path has it opening the playoffs at home against Boston.

A Dodgers–Yankees World Series remains a possibility. Both teams have the star power, rotation depth, and postseason experience to make a deep run.

Neither club can look that far ahead.

The Dodgers must find dependable answers in the bullpen. The Yankees may need to survive a high-pressure Wild Card Series against the Red Sox before reaching the Division Series. The next two weeks will determine whether each club enters October with momentum or unanswered concerns.
