Dodgers 40-Man Roster: Diego Cartaya, Michael Busch, Jonny DeLuca & Andy Pages Protected From Rule 5 Draft

Michael Busch, Diego Cartaya, Jonny DeLuca and Andy Pages were added to the Los Angeles Dodgers 40-man roster in order to protect them from potentially getting selected in the 2022 Rule 5 Draft.

The Dodgers went into the deadline with seven open spots and now have 37 players on their 40-man roster. That will increase to 38 once the re-signing of Clayton Kershaw is finalized.

The number could again change if the Dodgers elect to non-tender any players prior to Friday’s deadline. Cody Bellinger has been speculated as a candidate to become a free agent.

All teams had until 3 p.m. PT on Thursday to add players to their 40-man rosters in order to prevent them from being eligible in the Rule 5 Draft that’s being held Wednesday, Dec. 7, on the final day of the Winter Meetings.

Players signed at age 18 or younger become eligible after five seasons, while those who signed at age 19 or older become eligible within four seasons.

Last offseason the Dodgers put Jacob Amaya, Jorbit Vivas, Eddys Leonard, Michael Grove and James Outman on their 40-man roster ahead of the deadline to do so for the 2021 Rule 5 Draft. However, the MLB lockout wound up leading to its cancelation.

Notable Dodgers prospects who weren’t added to the 40-man roster but are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft are Hyun-Il Choi (2021 Dodgers Minor League Pitcher of the Year), Kody Hoese (2019 first-round pick) and Jose Ramos (Player of the Week for Week 6 in Arizona Fall League).
