On the latest episode of “DodgerHeads,” host Jeff Spiegel is joined by Los Angeles Dodgers prospect guru Justin Lorber (@FutureDodgers) to discuss the organization’s Minor Leaguers, Rule 5 Draft decision and more.
It’s the beginning of a series in which “DodgerHeads” will review a position group for 2020. To follow in the weeks ahead are four separate episodes focusing on outfielders, infielders, starting pitchers and relievers.
The discussion with Lorber began by appreciating the career arcs and development of former Dodgers prospects Clayton Kershaw, Will Smith, Julio Urias and others who factored prominently in the postseason run that culminated with the franchise’s first World Series title since 1988.
Lorber also highlighted which Minor League players could see increased opportunities next season. Should the 2021 campaign be 162 games, Lorber believes Zach McKinstry will be of extreme value to the Dodgers, particularly if fellow utility player Kiké Hernandez is not re-signed.
Although there are similarities between the two and a familiarity factor exists with Hernandez, Lorber explained why he would rely on a combination of McKinstry and Chris Taylor next season.
While Gavin Lux has graduated from prospect status, he invariably became part of the conversation after falling well short of expectations. He went into Spring Training as the presumed starting second baseman and a National League Rookie of the Year favorite.
Even with taking into account a bit of a lost season for Lux, Lorber noted his age — being two years younger than Will Smith — as one reason not to overreact.
Rule 5 Draft protection
As for the upcoming Rule 5 Draft, there was some surprise the Dodgers did not add Omar Estevez to their 40-man roster in order to protect against potentially losing him.
Lorber additionally provided his scouting reports on right-handed pitchers Gerardo Carrillo, Andre Jackson and Edwin Uceta, as well as outfielder Zach Reks.
