It’s shaping up to be another busy offseason for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and DodgerBlue.com will continue to discuss all the latest news and rumors with weekly live episodes of “DodgerHeads” on Monday nights at 9 p.m. PT.
The latest show featured host Jeff Spiegel and DodgerBlue.com senior writer/editor Daniel Starkand discussing the current state of the organization’s infield.
They started with the catching position, where the Dodgers have more organizational depth than perhaps any other position. There’s no doubt that Will Smith will be the starter and Austin Barnes likely will be backing him up in 2021, so what does that mean for Keibert Ruiz?
First base is probably the most straightforward position on the Dodgers. Max Muncy should remain the starter with Edwin Rios and Matt Beaty backing him up, barring any significant moves this offseason.
Second base is where things get interesting though as the Dodgers didn’t have one everyday player at the position in 2020 and likely won’t again next season. Gavin Lux will have a chance to win the job, but was his down year in 2020 a sign of what is to come or an aberration?
The discussion then shifted to Corey Seager, who had a terrific 2020 season that he capped off with winning MVP of both the National League Championship Series and World Series. He is only under club control for one more season though, so what would a potential extension look like, and is that even worth considering for the Dodgers?
Spiegel and Starkand then compared Seager to some of the big names on the trade market like Francisco Lindor, Nolan Arenado and Kris Bryant, going on record with who they would prefer long-term.
Will Justin Turner re-sign with Dodgers?
Before answering fan questions, the discussion ended with third base and if the Dodgers will bring back Justin Turner or find another high-profile name like Arenado or D.J. LeMahieu to replace him.
Although the Dodgers are said to have interest in trading for Arenado and were named as a potential suitor for LeMahieu, there’s a belief re-signing Turner is the team’s top choice and likely outcome.
