The Los Angeles Dodgers began a two-day celebration of their 2024 World Series title with Ice Cube part of the festivities and wearing their MLB gold program jersey and cap, and they clawed out just enough against Tarik Skubal for a 5-4 comeback win over the Detroit Tigers.
Snell retired the side in order in the first inning, but then faced plenty of traffic throughout his start. Albeit on plenty of soft contact, he allowed five hits — all singles — and issued four walks over his five innings of work.
A wild pitch allowed the Tigers to tie the game in the fourth inning and Manuel Margot’s sacrifice fly put them ahead 2-1 in the fifth.
Snell finished with just two strikeouts and threw 92 pitches.
He had been given a lead thanks to Tommy Edman’s solo home run in the second inning. Edman hit the Dodgers’ first home run of the 2025 season and started the tally at Dodger Stadium for the year.
But that largely was the only mistake Tarik Skubal made. The reigning Cy Young Award winner continued to keep the Dodgers off balance until he reached a pivotal point in the fifth inning.
With two runners on and two outs, the Tigers stuck with Skubal to face Teoscar Hernández as Freddie Freeman loomed on deck. Hernández ambushed the first pitch he saw for a three-run home run.
Ben Casparius allowed the first two batters to reach in the sixth inning but got through it unscathed. Alex Vesia surrendered a home run to Spencer Torkelson in the eighth inning that cut the Dodgers’ lead to a run. In addition to the homer, Torkelson drew four walks in the Tigers’ loss.
After Shohei Ohtani hit the Dodgers’ third home run of the game, Tanner Scott took over in the eighth and allowed a leadoff triple that ultimately led to a run. Blake Treinen stranded two runners to convert his first save of the season.
Dodgers franchise first
Thursday’s game marked the first time the Dodgers have ever faced an American League opponent for their Dodger Stadium opener.
The Dodgers extended their streak to seven consecutive wins in a home opener and also improved to 15-3 since 2008 when playing at Dodger Stadium for the first time in a season.
