The Double-A Tulsa Drillers Opening Day roster for the 2023 Minor League features a number of top Los Angeles Dodgers prospects, including Diego Cartaya, Andy Pages and Eddys Leonard.
The Drillers take the field for their first game of the year on Thursday at ONEOK Field. They’ll be led by manager Scott Hennessey returning for his sixth season.
Hennessey’s staff features a blend of new and familiar faces, with pitching coach Ryan Dennick, athletic trainer Jesse Guffey and performance coach Noah Huff among those returning to the Drillers.
Pitching coach Durin O’Linger, hitting coach Louis Iannotti, bench coach Juan Apodaca and video/development associate Mikael Mogues are newcomers.
As for the Drillers’ roster, Cartaya, Pages and Leonard were all in big league camp for 2023 Dodgers Spring Training. Cartaya had the most attention on him, given his status as one of the top prospects in baseball.
That didn’t amount to significant opportunities even with Austin Barnes and Will Smith participating in the World Baseball Classic, but Cartaya nevertheless is poised to be on the Drillers roster for the first time in his career.
Cartaya spent the 2022 season between Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and High-A Great Lakes, hitting a combined .254/.389/.503 with 22 doubles, 22 home runs and 72 RBI over 95 games.
Leonard is also up with the Drillers for the first time. He batted .264/.348/.435 with 32 doubles, four triples, 15 home runs and 61 RBI in 127 games with Great Lakes. Leonard also impressed in Spring Training as he collected nine hits and five RBI in 24 at-bats while appearing in 16 games.
The Dodgers added Leonard to their 40-man roster in November 2021, along with James Outman, Jacob Amaya, Jorbit Vivas and Michael Grove to protect them from that year’s Rule 5 Draft.
Pages is returning for a second season with Tulsa, where he hit 26 home runs in 132 games last year.
In addition to Cartaya, Pages and Leonard, those on the Dodgers 40-man roster and beginning with the season with the Drillers are Vivas and Jonny DeLuca.
Fellow Dodgers prospects Jose Ramos, Nick Frasso, Landon Knack and Emmet Sheehan are also on the Drillers Opening Day roster.
