Diamondbacks Vs. Dodgers Game Preview: Rare Doubleheader At Dodger Stadium

After coming from behind to earn a 5-4 win in the series opener, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks meet for a rare day-night doubleheader at Dodger Stadium.

Tuesday is the first Dodger Stadium doubleheader since July 22, 1999, and the first scheduled twin bill since Sept. 17, 1987, which was in order to accommodate Pope John Paul II’s visit to Chavez Ravine.

The Dodgers recalled Ryan Pepiot from Single-A Rancho Cucamonga as their 27th player permitted for a doubleheader. As expected, Pepiot is starting the afternoon game, with first pitch set for 12:10 p.m. PT.

Pepiot made his MLB debut last week against the Pittsburgh Pirates, throwing three scoreless innings despite issuing five walks. Pepiot attributed some of his command troubles to fighting nerves and not always being aligned with pitch mechanics.

The Diamondbacks counter with Tyler Gilbert, who was called up from Triple-A Reno ahead of Game 1 of the doubleheader. He is making his first MLB appearance since April 25 when he allowed one run on two hits in three innings of relief against the Dodgers.

Gilbert is 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA, 3.91 FIP and 0.81 WHIP in 8.2 innings of work this season (two games). He made nine appearances in his first taste of the Majors last season, going 2-2 with a 3.15 ERA, 4.27 FIP and 1.03 WHIP over 40 innings pitched (six starts).

Cody Bellinger is back in the Dodgers lineup after receiving his first game off this season. That’s left Freddie Freeman and Trea Turner as the only Dodgers to start every game so far in 2022.

Will Smith is behind the plate for the first game of the doubleheader, which suggests Austin Barnes will catch Tyler Anderson in the 7:10 p.m. start.

Prior to the game, the Dodgers activated Mitch White off the COVID-19 injured list and recalled Justin Bruihl from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Caleb Ferguson was optioned, Tommy Kahnle was placed on the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation and Blake Treinen was transferred to the 60-day IL as the corresponding roster moves.
