Diamondbacks Vs. Dodgers Game Preview: Gavin Stone Starts Chance For Series Win

The Los Angeles Dodgers got back in the win column with a 6-5 walk-off victory on Tuesday and now look to clinch their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Gavin Stone is on the mound for his 16th start of the season, coming off the best outing of his career against the Chicago White Sox. The right-hander allowed just four hits and collected seven strikeouts over nine scoreless innings, giving the Dodgers their first complete game of the season.

Stone improved to 9-2 with a 2.73 ERA, 3.34 FIP and 1.12 WHIP in 89 innings pitched this season. The 25-year-old is having a breakout year and could potentially be rewarded with his first All-Star appearance, which Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has pushed for.

Stone is making his second career start against the Diamondbacks. He faced them earlier this season and was tabbed for a loss after giving up four runs on eight hits in six innings of work.

The Diamondbacks are giving the ball to Cristian Mena, who is being called up from the Minor Leagues for his MLB debut.

The 21-year-old has pitched in 16 games this season, going 3-2 with a 4.90 ERA and 1.49 WHIP across 82.2 innings while striking out 89 hitters in the very hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

Ranked as the Diamondbacks’ No. 11 prospect by MLB Pipeline, Mena led the PCL in strikeouts, and he utilizes five-pitch mix with secondary offerings that have been very effective at getting swing and miss. However, his fastball leaves a lot to be desired.

He was acquired by the D-Backs last year from the Chicago White Sox last offseason.

Against Mena, the Dodgers go with the same lineup for the second consecutive day, which has become their normal lineup against a right-hander. Chris Taylor also continues to start at third base, which was expected for the time being.
