Diamondbacks Hire Shaun Larkin From Dodgers As Director Of Player Development

The Arizona Diamondbacks named Shaun Larkin as their new director of player development, hiring him away from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Larkin had been with the Dodgers for the past eight seasons, first joining the organization in September 2015 as a skill development coordinator.

He stayed in that role until Sept. 2019, when he was named assistant field coordinator and earned a promotion to field coordinator in November 2020, which is the role he most recently held with the Dodgers.

Larkin has also held two coaching stints in the Cleveland Guardians system from 2007-08 and 2013-15, serving as manager at Low-A Lake County in 2015, hitting coach at Lake County in 2014 Short-Season A Mahoning Valley in 2013.

He spent 2007-08 with Cleveland’s Double-A Akron, assisting management and the coaching staff with player development and serving as the team’s first base coach.

Larkin also has coaching experience in the collegiate coaching ranks at his alma mater, California State University, Northridge (CSUN), in 2011-12 and Orange Coast College in 2010.

Larkin spent parts of 6 seasons in Cleveland’s Minor League system from 2002-06 as their ninth-round pick in the 2002 draft.

He has his master’s degree in performance psychology from National University and his bachelor’s degree in communication studies from CSUN, where he played collegiately.

In addition, the D-Backs also promoted Chris Slivka to be their assistant director of player development, where he will work under Larkin.

Slivka is entering his ninth season with Arizona, most recently serving as a Player Personnel Analyst the last 2 seasons. He has also spent time as a pro scout (2019-21), baseball operations assistant (2017-18) and a baseball operations intern (2016).

Who will replace Shaun Larkin for the Dodgers?

The Dodgers now have an open position as for their field coordinator, which is part of their roving staff. The assistant field coordinator role is currently held by Austin Chubb.

That presumably makes Chubb the favorite to take over for the Dodgers in their field coordinator role.

Chubb has been a well-regarded member of the Dodgers’ player development staff and continues to rise through their system. He previously managed the High-A Great Lakes Loons and was named the 2022 Midwest League Manager of the Year.

Chubb, in his second season at the helm, became only the third Loons manager to win the postseason award, joining Juan Bustabad (2010) and John Shoemaker (2019). Chubb previously earned Manager of the Year honors in 2019 when he was with the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League.
