David Freese Disagrees With Giving Dodgers World Series Trophy If Astros & Red Sox Are Stripped

When Major League Baseball announced their findings from a three-month investigation of the Houston Astros, they issued a gag order to other clubs. For the Los Angeles Dodgers, they additionally were instructed not to speak about the 2017 World Series as well.

Aside from issuing a statement to explain they would comply with MLB’s wishes, the Dodgers have not addressed commissioner Rob Manfred finding the Astros electronically stole signs during their championship season.

Players, however, have continued to weigh in. David Freese commended MLB for the severity of the punishment the Astros received, though he also suggested the league strip their World Series title. But even with that, Freese firmly disagrees with the notion of the Dodgers being awarded a World Series trophy:

Take the ring away? Maybe that’s the right thing to do. Maybe not. Who knows. Giving the title to the runner-up tho… that definitely ain’t it. Who would want it that way anyways.

— David Freese (@DavidFreese) January 21, 2020

The retired infielder’s remarks seemingly are in response to the L.A. City Council unanimously approving a resolution urging MLB to strip the Astros and Boston Red Sox of their respective World Series titles and award them to the Dodgers.

The resolution was presented by council members Gil Cedillo and Paul Koretz last week in response Manfred bringing forth punishments against the Astros for their electronic sign-stealing. The league’s investigation into the Red Sox remains ongoing.

Freese was with L.A. during the second half of the 2018 season, which ended with L.A. losing to Boston in five games.

Multiple Dodgers players have voiced their frustration and disappointment with the Astros’ actions, but none have championed for being rewarded with a World Series trophy after the fact.
