Dave Roberts Unsure Of Andy Pages’ Role With Dodgers

When active rosters expanded to 28 players on Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Justin Wrobleski and Andy Pages from Triple-A Oklahoma City before their matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Wrobleski struggled in a spot start, allowing a career-worst 10 runs and 10 hits over 5.1 innings of work. The right-hander’s ability to pitch into the sixth inning nevertheless helped preserve the bullpen, which earned praise from Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

As for Pages, he went 0-for-3 after replacing Mookie Betts in right field during the bottom of the third. The Diamondbacks already had an 8-0 lead, which prompted Roberts to take many of his starters out.

Pages, at one point, was getting regular playing time in center field for the Dodgers, but Roberts isn’t sure what his role will be going forward, via Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:

“What role we use him, that remains to be seen,” he said. “But obviously Andy has been a big part of what we’ve done this year.”

Pages originally joined the Dodgers in mid-April and hit his way into an everyday role. However, he eventually cooled off at the plate and was a victim of the Dodgers roster crunch as he got optioned to OKC when Max Muncy returned from the 60-day injured list.

Pages became the odd man out with Kevin Kiermaier’s presence, the Dodgers’ plan to play Tommy Edman in center field and Betts returning to right field.

The 23-year-old is hitting .244/.302/.385 with 22 doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 36 RBI in 397 plate appearances across 97 games this season.

At minimum, Pages gives the Dodgers another right-handed bat off the bench and a player who is capable of handling all three outfield positions for the final month of the regular season.

Andy Pages’ offensive turnaround with Dodgers

After enduring the worst month of his big league career in July, Pages had turned things around before being demoted to OKC. He hit .290/.389/.548 with five doubles, a home run and five RBI in 10 games (eight starts) at the big league level in August.
