Dave Roberts Valued Dustin May’s Contributions In Final Season With Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals over the weekend gave them a chance to catch up with Dustin May for the first time since his trade to the Boston Red Sox at the 2025 deadline.

The right-hander made 19 appearances (18 starts) in his final season with the Dodgers, pitching to a 6-7 record, 4.85 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 104 innings. It was his first Major League action in two years after missing the entire 2024 season while recovering from separate right arm and esophageal surgeries.

May originally joined the Dodgers when he was selected by the organization in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He flashed immense potential in parts of six seasons with the team, but was never able to put it all together due to being limited by several injuries over the years.

“It was great,” manager Dave Roberts said of May’s 2025 season with the Dodgers. “I kind of likened that to what Gavin Stone did for us a couple years back, where before he got hurt, he pitched the most innings for us.

“Dustin was taking the baseball, dealt with a lot of injuries throughout the early part of his career, but he’s a tough kid. He’s a good competitor. It felt good to give him his ring the other day. I always wish him well. He was a big contributor.”

Along with struggling to stay on the field, May faced an uphill climb in factoring into the Dodgers’ long-term plans as they had a plethora of quality pitching depth behind him.

The 28-year-old was still a popular player during his stint with L.A., and that was evident when the team presented him with his 2025 World Series ring on Friday. He was greeted by Roberts and many of his former teammates in photos shared by the team on social media.

The Dodgers salvaged their series at Busch Stadium by defeating the Cardinals on Sunday in a game that saw May make his first carer start against his original team.

He held L.A. to three runs on seven hits over six innings of work in a losing effort. May now owns a 3-3 record with a 5.15 ERA, 3.83 FIP and 1.53 WHIP in 36.2 innings across seven starts this season.
