The Los Angeles Dodgers overcame a slew of injuries to win the 2024 World Series, which put manager Dave Roberts in unprecedented territory.
Roberts joined Walter Alston (four) and Tommy Lasorda (two) as the only managers in Dodgers franchise history to lead the team to multiple World Series titles. “Humbling. Never thought I would be in that same conversation,” Roberts recently said of the achievement.
“I’m a part of a great organization, a lot of great people around me supporting me, and we’ve won a lot of ballgames. This is something I really wanted. I wanted this one.
“There were some guys that were here with me in ’20, and you hear some naysayers, and so we didn’t get the parade that I’ve been talking about the last week. I’m proud of a lot of guys. The list goes on for the players that put me in this position.”
Roberts’ first World Series title as a manager came during the 2020 season, when the Dodgers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in six games.
However, many were quick to dismiss that accomplishment as it occurred during the shortened campaign that was brought on by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
The Dodgers weren’t able to hold a traditional parade celebration that year, which the team used as further motivation to win another title in 2024.
L.A. accomplished their goal under difficult circumstances, which earned Roberts praise from general manager Brandon Gomes, among others.
Max Muncy: Dodgers will retire No. 30 for Dave Roberts
Max Muncy believes Roberts’ legacy was cemented after the team won the 2024 World Series and that the franchise will eventually retire his No. 30 jersey.
Roberts is currently fourth in wins among all-time Dodgers managers with 851. He has led the team to the playoffs in all nine of his seasons at the helm.
Roberts is entering the final year of his contract, but all indications are that he will sign a long-term extension to remain with the Dodgers.
