The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their winning streak to seven games by sweeping the Cincinnati Reds and continuing a torrid start to September.
The Dodgers are now 7-2 to begin the month, having scored at least six runs in all but one game during the stretch. L.A. started playing well around this point last season as well, which came after they struggled through July and parts of August.
Manager Dave Roberts is hoping for a repeat this year, with the Dodgers catching fire in September and carrying that momentum into the postseason.
“I do,” Roberts said when asked if the last few days could set a similar tone. “Even the last couple teams, they’re offensive. It’s good to see our offense come to life, get timely hits, take walks, create stress and get some big hits. It’s time to go, and I think our guys understand that.”
The Dodgers went 15-10 last September and rode that success into the playoffs, where they eliminated the Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers and Toronto Blue Jays en route to repeating as World Series champions.
That didn’t come without some rough patches as the 2025 Dodgers went a combined 25-27 in July and August. This year’s team actually fared better during those months, finishing 26-25 despite being plagued by numerous injuries.
The Dodgers have since gotten back several key contributors, with even more expected to rejoin the club before the end of the regular season. Improved health and hitting have been catalysts for L.A.’s recent success.
As Roberts noted, the offense has looked more like its usual self in September, with Teoscar Hernández, Mookie Betts, Tommy Edman and others leading the charge. Being able to sustain that success will be pivotal as the Dodgers enter the final weeks of the season and try to win a third consecutive World Series.
Dave Roberts believes Dodgers’ depth is important to success
The Dodgers have navigated another season in which their roster and organizational depth were needed. Over recent weeks the likes of Alex Call, Hunter Feduccia and Emmet Sheehan have been among those to play key roles.
“Yeah, it’s important,” Roberts recently said of the team’s depth. “That’s one of the hallmarks of our ballclub. On the pitching side, the positional player side. It’s a long season, you’ve got to be able to use your roster.
“We pretty much go 60 players deep every year, it seems like. To have dependable guys on the bench or in the ‘pen that know who they are, know their roles, It’s important. Even the relievers right now, we’ve cycled through a lot of different relief pitchers this year, but our front office does a great job of finding arms that are serviceable.
“I like our positional player group, as far as you can plug and play in a lot of different places. Very versatile group and very battle tested, so the spot’s not going to get too big for any of those guys.”
