The Los Angeles Dodgers’ struggles continued with an 8-6 loss to the New York Mets in the opener of a three-game series on Monday, which dropped the team to below .500 for the first time this season.
The Dodgers have lost three of their first four games on the current homestand and sit in second place in the National League West behind the Arizona Diamondbacks.
“We would love to be 17-0. We haven’t gotten off to the start we wanted, but what is talking about it going to do?” Freddie Freeman said after the Dodgers’ latest loss.
“We’ve got to go out there and play better and start winning games. That’s all you can really do. We can talk all we want, but we’ve got to go out there tomorrow and get a split going.”
Max Muncy echoed a similar sentiment and noted the Dodgers simply have to take care of business on the field. “It’s baseball. It’s going to happen,” he said of the team’s skid.
“It is frustrating, but at the same time we’ve just got to go out there every single day and play that game. We’ve got to worry about today, and as long as we do that, I feel confident about our team.”
Freeman had been mired in a 4-for-28 slump heading into the series opener against the Mets but broke out of that with his 18th career multi-homer effort. As for Muncy, he continued swinging a hot bat by going 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the sixth inning that gave the Dodgers a lead.
Dave Roberts frustrated with Dodgers inconsistency
The Dodgers have been one of the most inconsistent teams in baseball this season, and that was evident on Monday against the Mets. The team scored more than two runs for the first time in nearly a week, only for the bullpen to give up the lead.
“A little bit,” Roberts answered when asked if he has been frustrated with the Dodgers’ inconsistency this season. But to be quite honest, Freddie had a big night and Wynns had a two-out hit.
“So I think if you look at it in totality, it was a two-man show, to be quite honest. Yeah, we put six runs on the board, but we should be better up and down the lineup as far as quality of at-bats. … “They’re frustrated. We know what we’re capable of. We’ve just got to keep going. That’s what separates good teams from teams that aren’t good.”
