The Los Angeles Dodgers fell short of completing a sweep over the San Diego Padres on Sunday, but still had plenty of positives to take away from the four-game series at Dodger Stadium.
Among the bright spots was getting to Padres All-Star closer Mason Miller on Independence Day. The right-hander allowed only his fourth earned run of the season when he gave up an RBI single to Freddie Freeman in the eighth inning of the Dodgers’ 3-0 win, which came after Tommy Edman reached base on a leadoff hit by pitch.
“There’s not many better than Mason Miller,” manager Dave Roberts said after the game. “He hasn’t pitched a lot in the last 10 days, so sort of rusty. Hits Tommy, gets behind 3-0 to Andy (Pages), gets a guy to second base, and Freddie leans on a fastball.
“He hasn’t been as sharp against us, allowing some free passes and things like that. We’ve been able to stress him a little bit.”
Miller previously allowed an unearned run against the Dodgers during a May 19 appearance at Petco Park. That came after Max Muncy drew a one-out walk. Pinch-runner Alex Call wound up advancing to third base after a throwing error by Miller before scoring on Andy Pages’ go-ahead sacrifice fly.
Pages’ drove in the run after a lengthy at-bat that garnered praise from Roberts and teammates alike.
Miller owns a 2.45 ERA in 3.2 innings across four appearances against the Dodgers this season, which is his third-highest mark for any team behind only the Chicago Cubs (6.75) and New York Mets (5.40).
Miller did bounce back in the Padres’ 5-2 win over the Dodgers on Sunday night as he recorded a scoreless ninth inning en route to his National League-leading 22nd save of the season.
Mason Miller among NL All-Stars
Miller was among the pitchers included on the NL roster for the 2026 MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. He is 2-1 with a minuscule 0.98 ERA, 0.60 FIP, 0.82 WHIP and 16.4 strikeouts per nine in 36.2 innings across 35 appearances entering play Monday.
Miller is the Padres’ only representative in this year’s Midsummer Classic. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are tied with the host Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves for the most All-Star Game selections at five.
