Dave Roberts: Dodgers Need To ‘Clean Up’ Communication After Andy Pages Nearly Collides With Teoscar Hernández

Andy Pages will forever be linked to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 2025 World Series title for his game-saving catch in the winner-take-all matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Pages, who had just replaced Tommy Edman in center field, traveled 121 feet to track down a ball off the bat of Ernie Clement with two outs and the bases loaded, sending the game to extra innings. Pages used his length to reach for the ball over Kiké Hernández and collided with him in the process.

The 25-year-old made a similar catch in the Dodgers’ 6-3 win over the Texas Rangers on Saturday, but was able to narrowly avoid a collision with Teoscar Hernández. Hernández appeared to call for the ball before Pages cut in front of him to make the catch.

“I think it’s his,” Hernández said after the game when asked whose ball it was. “I was playing a little closer to the line. You know, it’s one of those where I can get it, he can get it, but it’s definitely his ball.”

The SportsNet LA broadcast caught Pages and Hernández playfully going back and forth with each other in the dugout over who had priority to make the catch. So much so that they even asked Dodgers manager Dave Roberts for his input.

“I mean, shoot, yeah, exactly,” Roberts jokingly said after the game when asked if Pages has claimed ownership of the left-center field gap.

“We got to make sure we clean that up. Because it’s funny when the play is made, but we got to make sure that the communication is clear.”

Andy Pages off to hot start

Along with playing stellar defense in center field, Pages has been one of the Dodgers’ most productive bats through the first two weeks of the regular season.

He enters play Sunday leading the National League in total hits (23), RBI (17), batting average (.442), on-base percentage (.482), slugging percentage (.750), on-base plus slugging (1.232) and bWAR (1.6).

Pages was named NL Player of the Week for March 30-April 5 after going a combined 13-for-20 during the stretch. He became the first Dodgers player with at least five multi-hit games in a row since Shohei Ohtani accomplished the feat from April 3-8, 2024.
