Dave Roberts: Dodgers’ Current Winning Stretch ‘Different’ From 2017 Team Going 43-7

The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their winning streak to a season-best 10 games with an 8-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins that completed a perfect 5-0 homestand.

The Dodgers have been on a roll over the last month and a half, posting a Major League-best 32-5 record since June 26. That isn’t far off from the historic 43-7 run the 2017 team went on.

However, manager Dave Roberts sees differences between the two stretches. “No, it doesn’t,” he said when asked if the current winning stretch is comparable to 2017. “It’s different in the sense that I think that run was magical in that we came from behind late a lot. It was magical stuff late.

“We’ve done that here in this five-week stretch, but for the most part, we’ve just kind of taken leads and kept them, or regained a lead in the middle innings. There’s not as much dramatics as there was in ’17. That ’17 run was pretty special, but we’re on our way.”

As Roberts noted, the 2017 Dodgers had a knack for late-inning dramatics, as evidenced by their 10 walk-off wins. This year’s team, by comparison, only has three walk-off victories.

The 2022 Dodgers have done a better job at taking a lead early in the game and holding onto it, with a multitude of players seemingly contributing every night. The latest was Joey Gallo, whose pinch-hit, three-run homer on Wednesday proved to be the difference.

“A lot of good players. A lot of good players. And we have won a lot of different ways,” Roberts said. “Whether it’s a starter going out and preventing runs, or getting a big Joey Gallo homer, or scoring a bunch of crooked numbers throughout our lineup.

“We’re doing a lot of good things right now.”

Dodgers lead Majors when trailing

The Dodgers’ come-from-behind victory against the Twins was the fifth of their 10-game winning streak. They are 33-32 when trailing this season and are the only team in baseball with a winning record in that situation.
