The Los Angeles Dodgers ended their six-game road trip with a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in a rubber match at Citizens Bank Park that dropped their record to 2-4 over those games.
Julio Urías was originally expected to return for the series finale but the Dodgers instead relied on a bullpen game because the left-hander suffered a setback with his recovery from a hamstring strain.
Caleb Ferguson was utilized as an opener, and he allowed one run and was tabbed with the loss. However, the big change in the game happened in the third inning with Adam Kolarek on the mound.
With two runners on and two outs, Bryson Stott blooped a single into left field to drive in a pair. It put the Phillies up 3-0 and increased their win probability to 83.5%, which Dodgers manager Dave Roberts feels was the defining moment in the 7-3 loss, via SportsNet LA:
“Obviously we were going to try to figure out a way to navigate this game today. I thought Fergy threw the ball well, there were a couple of soft-contact balls that got in that put them on the board. I thought we were good at that point and after that, Victor was good. And then there was some soft contact in there as far as Tayler Scott.
“I thought he threw the baseball well. And then we bring in Kolarek, and that was sort of the point where it flipped the game in the sense that we had a two-out situation with two guys on. There was a flare that found some outfield grass. I thought Adam made a good pitch, and credit to their guy for putting the ball in play.”
The Dodgers scored their first run on a Freddie Freeman solo shot in the sixth, but the Phillies answered with one more in the bottom half of the inning that made the score 4-1, which was ultimately enough for them to win the game.
Jason Heyward added a solo homer in the seventh inning and Max Muncy grounded into a run-scoring force out in the eighth, but the Phillies scored three runs off Nick Robertson to effectively put the game out of reach.
Dodgers recalled Adam Kolarek
Before the game began, Kolarek joined the Dodgers for his second stint after they selected his contract and optioned Andre Jackson to Triple-A Oklahoma City. To make room on the 40-man roster, Trayce Thompson was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Kolarek went 0-3 with a 2.18 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 21 relief appearances for Oklahoma City.
