The Los Angeles Dodgers came from behind to defeat the San Francisco Giants, 10-5, in the rubber match of a three-game series at Oracle Park. Max Muncy led the offense with two home runs, but it was a key plate appearance by Freddie Freeman that allowed the team to complete the comeback.
With the score tied in the top of the sixth, the Dodgers began the inning by drawing three consecutive walks against Taylor Rogers. That gave Freeman an opportunity to put L.A. in front, and he did just that by working a 15-pitch walk.
That was the most Freeman has seen in any plate appearance of his career, and the most seen by a Dodgers player since Justin Turner’s 16-pitch walk on May 26, 2014.
Clayton Kershaw, who picked up the 199th win of his career, believes Freeman’s walk with the bases loaded could help the Dodgers turn around their season, as seen on SportsNet LA:
“Obviously the first three guys getting on base that inning helped. There were a lot of great at-bats. Those first three guys got on to load the bases. Freddie’s at-bat, I really do think that’s a momentum shift, potentially season shift. All those things. That one at-bat can do a lot. The way he grinded, the way he fouled off pitch after pitch, fastball after curveball. It was just really impressive.”
The Dodgers have gotten off to somewhat of a slow start this season, but their win against the Giants allowed them to avoid falling below .500 this season. L.A. finished their first road trip with a 3-4 record and are an overall 7-6 on the year.
The Dodgers are now set to begin a six-game homestand on Friday, with three games apiece against the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets.
Freddie Freeman: 15-pitch walk ‘up there’ among career at-bats
After getting ahead 2-0 in the count, Freeman fouled off consecutive pitches. Rogers then worked it full, and Freeman proceeded to foul off nine pitches in a row before drawing a walk.
Following the Dodgers’ 10-5 win, Freeman said it was one of the more memorable plate appearances of his career.
