Chad Tracy, Son Of Former Dodgers Manager, In Difficult Position With Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora, along with hitting coach Peter Fatse, third base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramón Vázquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson, and Major League hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin on Saturday.

Additionally, game planning and run prevention coach Jason Varitek was reassigned to a new role within the organization. Details of which will be announced at a later date.

Chad Tracy was named interim manager for the Red Sox. Cora was in the second season of a three-year, $21.75 million contract extension he signed in July 2024 that made him one of the highest-paid managers in baseball. Cora’s contract doesn’t expire until after the 2027 season.

The sweeping changes came after the Red Sox routed the Baltimore Orioles, 17-1. That snapped a four-game losing streak but still left the Red Sox in last place in the American League East with a 10-17 record this season.

Why Chad Tracy sounds familiar

The new interim Red Sox manager is the son of former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Jim Tracy, who was at the helm with the team for five seasons from 2001-05.

Tracy signed a two-year contract extension on Nov. 24, 2004, to manage the Dodgers through the end of the 2006 season. That came on the heels of the Dodgers winning their first National League West title since 1995.

But Tracy never made it through the entirety of that deal as he and the Dodgers mutually agreed to part ways after a dismal 71-91 record in 2005, citing “philosophical differences.” Tracy went 427-383 over his four years as Dodgers manager. It represented his first managerial position at the Major League level.

Now his son is pressed into a difficult position with the Red Sox. Chad Tracy had served as Manager of Triple-A Worcester since 2022. He spent the previous seven seasons (2015-21) in the Los Angeles Angels Minor League system, including three as manager of Low-A Burlington (2015) and High-A Inland Empire (2016-17). Tracy then was the Angels’ Minor League field coordinator from 2018-21.

He is the 19th interim manager to take over for a manager who was fired within the first 30 games of a season.

Tracy following in his father’s footsteps is somewhat common within the industry. Cole Roberts, son of current Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, recently retired from playing and is now a Minor League coach in the Detroit Tigers organization.
