Carson Fulmer has had a rocky journey since being selected eighth overall by the Chicago White Sox in the 2015 MLB Draft. Now 28 years old, the right-hander was taken by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Rule 5 Draft this past season.
They are the sixth different organization Fulmer has pitched for in his career. Across 74 Major League games, Fulmer has managed a poor 6.41 ERA, but progressive organizations continue to take a chance on him.
He right-hander has always had electric stuff but command that lagged far behind. A former teammate of Walker Buehler’s at Vanderbilt, Fulmer has had a polar opposite career to this point.
However, Fulmer is looking to get his career on track and believes that could come with the Dodgers as he has more clarity on how to pitch, according to Bill Plunkett of the Southern California News Group:
“I’m pitching to my strengths,” he said. “I have a clear plan on what I’m trying to do. … I just have to pitch to what I’m good at. I think that’s all they want me to do here. They think that I’m going to be a very big part of this organization and I think that’s really reassuring.”
It is easy to see why the Dodgers have taken an interest in Fulmer. His pedigree as a former first-rounder with elite raw stuff has the player development department believing they can turn him into a productive arm.
The Dodgers have an amazing track record when it comes to reclamation projects of Fulmer’s ilk, with fellow relief pitcher Brandon Morrow chief among them.
While Fulmer is still a work in progress, the Dodgers believe he can contribute for the team at some point during the 2022 season if all goes according to plan.
Carson Fulmer’s stats during Dodgers Spring Training
Fulmer only appeared in two Cactus League games for the Dodgers, but he allowed just one hit and collected three strikeouts over three scoreless innings.
However, there’s been regression with Triple-A Oklahoma City, as Fulmer owns a 6.23 ERA over three appearances.
