With MLB free agency slowing after top players signed respective contracts, some of the focus shifted to a potential Bryan Reynolds trade as he looks to move on from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Reynolds made his trade request in early December due to contract extension negotiations with the Pirates seemingly reaching an impasse.
“While it is disappointing, this will have zero impact on our decision-making this off-season or in the future,” the Pirates said in a statement. “Our goal is to improve the Pirates for 2023 and beyond. With three years until he hits free agency, Bryan remains a key member of our team. We look forward to him having a great season for the Pirates.”
As the Pirates have fielded Reynolds trade interest, what they covet in return for the All-Star is said to be exorbitant, per John Heyman of the New York Post:
One interested team exec summed up the Pirates requests in two words: “unrealistic asks.” Another team’s exec says there’s nothing happening now but they hold hope for spring.
In addition to Reynolds being an attractive trade chip in a relatively quiet market, the Pirates can take a hard stance due to the 27-year-old being under team control through the 2025 season.
For the Dodgers, Reynolds seemingly checks off their wish list of a left-handed hitting outfielder. The switch-hitter is capable of filling the void for Cody Bellinger in center field but did take a step back defensively in 2022.
The Dodgers have also been linked to a potential trade for Dylan Carlson, Jarred Kelenic and Alex Thomas.
Bobby Miller could be key to Bryan Reynolds trade
The Pirates are said to be seeking a top pitching prospect to headline their return in a Reynolds trade. The Dodgers have a bevy of young pitchers in their farm system, and Bobby Miller is believed to be an enticing option for Pittsburgh.
Of course, L.A. is just as bullish on the young right-hander, and Miller is expected to make his MLB debut this year.
