When Teoscar Hernández first joined the Los Angeles Dodgers organization it was on a one-year contract that represented an opportunity to re-establish his value in free agency.
Hernández proceded to have a strong season and played a key role in the Dodgers winning the 2024 World Series, and went into last offseason openly stating his preference was to remain with the team. While the feeling was mutual, free agency became a drawn-out process before Hernández and the Dodgers ultimately agreed on a three-year contract.
Although 2025 saw the Dodgers achieve their goal of becoming back-to-back World Series champions, which Hernández again contributed to, he regressed at the plate and battled multiple injuries this past season.
As the Dodgers look to fill an opening in their outfield, a different possibility that has surfaced was trading Hernández.
Amid reports of the Dodgers having Hernández on the trade block, general manager Brandon Gomes downplayed the likelihood of the team parting with him, per Jack Harris of the L.A. Times:
“That doesn’t feel likely,” Gomes added of the possibility of trading Hernández. “Obviously, you can never say never on those types of things. I know that’s come up [in reports]. But that’s not something we anticipate at all.”
Excluding deferred salary, Hernández has two years and north of $46 million remaining on his contract. His deal with the Dodgers included a $23 million signing bonus, $23.5 million in deferred salary, and $15 million team option for 2028 or a $6.5 million buyout.
The Dodgers then owe $2.35 million to Hernández annually from 2030-2039.
Teoscar Hernández’s future with Dodgers
Gomes’ comments about a potential Hernández trade came shortly after manager Dave Roberts also spoke with members of the media during MLB’s Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla.
Roberts offered a similar vote of confidence in Hernández having a spot with the team but did acknowledge it could entail a return to left field. That’s where Hernández played for the Dodgers in 2024 but spent this past season back in right field, his preferred position.
