Brandon Gomes: Dodgers’ Roster Depth ‘In A Decent Spot’

The Los Angeles Dodgers have again been ravaged by injuries this season, forcing them to tap into their depth more times than not.

The team is particularly thin at left field and second base, with Teoscar Hernández, Kiké Hernández and Tommy Edman all currently on the injured list.

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes knows it is a difficult situation to be in, but likes the organization’s depth to help them weather the storm, via Katie Woo of The Athletic.

“It’s always front of mind to be able to build depth, because things happen,” general manager Brandon Gomes said Friday. “Sometimes they time out where they’re on top of each other. The injuries being spaced out would obviously be a lot better, but that’s not how it works out.

“But right now we feel — knock on wood — that our depth is in a decent spot.”

The Dodgers are currently relying on a soft platoon of Ryan Ward and Alex Call in left field. For Ward, it is his first time getting extended MLB action after spending parts of seven seasons in the Minors.

Alex Freeland is also getting another opportunity to handle starting duties at second base, with Santiago Espinal and Miguel Rojas capable of stepping in if needed.

With Edman recently beginning a rehab assignment, help should soon be on the way for the Dodgers. He figures to spend the maximum 20 days in the Minors, which could see him rejoin the Major League roster on June 16 if all goes well.

Meanwhile, the team received some good news with an MRI revealing only for Teoscar Hernández a Grade 1 left hamstring strain. However, Hernández is still expected to miss at least a few weeks and the Dodgers are going to err on the side of caution with his recovery.

Dodgers winning without key contributors

Despite being without several of their key contributors, the Dodgers are still finding ways to win games. L.A. has won 15 of their last 19 contests entering play Wednesday, expanding their lead in the National League West by six games since the start of the stretch on May 13.
