After dealing with right ankle trouble over the last two seasons, Tommy Edman is scheduled to undergo surgery next week in effort to find a solution for the nagging injury.
Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes shared news of Edman’s impending surgery during the general managers meetings in Las Vegas. It was an outcome Edman himself left open the possibility for when asked about his ankle during the World Series.
Gomes did not specify what type of procedure Edman would be having but noted the Dodgers expect a recovery to be available for Spring Training. With that, however, Gomes added the team isn’t going to rush the process toward a return, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Southern California News Group:
Gomes didn’t provide any details on the nature of the surgery, and he said only that “the goal” is to have him ready for spring training.
“We’re gonna be smart,” Gomes said. “Obviously, he hasn’t had it yet. So we’ll look into that as we get into the rehab process. And like we do with everything, let’s keep the big picture in mind, or the goal of playing through October.”
Edman was limited to just 97 games this year and primarily played second base as the Dodgers looked to manage the health of his troublesome right ankle.
Despite missing stretches of time, Edman tied a career high with 13 home runs and finished with 49 RBI, which were the third-most he’s had in a season.
The Dodgers signed Edman to a five-year, $74 million contract extension last offseason.
Tommy Edman ankle injury history
Edman initially sprained his right ankle while on rehab assignment with the St. Louis Cardinals early last year. He was on the injured list at the time of being traded to the Dodgers.
Then this season, Edman first landed on the IL in early May due to an official designation of right ankle inflammation. That stemmed from spraining the ankle in a different area than his 2024 injury. Edman’s return was slightly delayed due to having trouble with advancing to the point of being able to run without any discomfort.
Edman encountered more trouble in early June after tweaking his right ankle during a game against the New York Mets, but he avoided the injured list.
Edman later aggravated his ankle while running the bases against the Boston Red Sox. He was a late scratch from the Dodgers’ lineup on July 28 and couldn’t pinch-hit in a key situation that night. Though, he again managed to avoid going back on the injured list.
That changed in early August wdhen another sprained right ankle force Edman to the IL. The Dodgers at that point took a methodical approach and did not rush to activate 30-year-old so that he could make a full recovery. Edman didn’t return until five weeks later.
