The Boston Red Sox have cast a wide net in their search for a new head of baseball operations, which reportedly included Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes and senior vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes.

Gomes formally took himself out of the running when he declined to interview for the position. “I’m very flattered and appreciative of the interest, but I love it and my family loves it here,” Gomes said of turning down the Red Sox in favor of staying with the Dodgers.

“I’m passionate about this organization and solely focused on winning multiple championships here.”

Gomes first joined the Dodgers in November 2016 as pitching coordinator of performance. He was promoted to director of player development in December 2017, filling a void that was created when the Philadelphia Phillies hired Gabe Kapler as manager.

The Dodgers then promoted Gomes to vice president and assistant general manager in March 2019. He was elevated to general manger in January 2022, a role that remained vacant for three seasons after Farhan Zaidi become San Francisco Giants president of baseball operations in November 2018.

The promotion made him the 12th GM in franchise history and he is now set to enter his eighth season with the Dodgers organization and third as executive vice president and GM.

In addition to his front office work, Gomes enjoyed a five-year Major League career with the Tampa Bay Rays (2011-15), going 11-12
while posting one save and a 4.20 ERA in 173 games, all out of the bullpen. He was originally selected by the San Diego Padres in the 17th round of the 2007 First-Year Player draft out of Tulane University, where he double majored in finance and legal studies.

While Gomes is no longer an option to lead Boston’s baseball operations department, Byrnes presumably remains in the mix. He previously served as the Red Sox assistant general manager from 2003-2005, behind then-general manager Theo Epstein.

Dodgers denied Mets permission for interview with Brandon Gomes

Prior to being promoted to Dodgers general manager, the New York Mets reportedly had interest in interviewing Gomes for the same position in late 2021.

However, the Dodgers declined the Mets’ request, and New York went on to hire Billy Eppler for the role.
