Boston Red Sox Sign Kiké Hernandez To 2-Year Contract

The Boston Red Sox officially announced the signing of Kiké Hernandez to a two-year contract. The team did not release financial details, but prior reports indicated the deal is worth $14 million.

Hernandez and the Red Sox came to terms on Jan. 22. His departure from the Los Angeles Dodgers had become expected as Hernandez sought an opportunity to play every day. The 29-year-old shared a heartfelt goodbye video in which he thanked the organization and fans.

Even while filling a utility role for the majority of the past six seasons with the Dodgers, Hernandez appeared in a minimum of 100 games in four years, including three of at least 130 games. He played in 80% (48) of the Dodgers’ 60 games last season, and 17 of 18 in the playoffs.

The Dodgers acquired Hernandez, along with Andrew Heaney, Chris Hatcher and Austin Barnes in a December 2014 trade that sent Dee Gordon, Dan Haren, Miguel Rojas and cash considerations to the Miami Marlins.

Hernandez emerged as a super utility man in L.A., providing plus defense at every position and a threat against left-handed pitching.

Including a relief appearance in 2018, Hernandez has played every defensive position other than catcher. He’s made 132 starts at second base, 128 in center field, 60 in left field, 56 at shortstop, 35 in right field, 14 at third base and 11 at first base.

With the Red Sox, Hernandez should get an opportunity to make regular starts at second base. In addition to Boston, the Minnesota Twins and New York Mets reportedly were among the teams with interest in Hernandez.

He gets to reunite with fellow countryman Alex Cora, who returned to manage the Red Sox after one year away and was the general manager for Team Puerto Rico in 2017 World Baseball Classic, which featured Hernandez on the roster.

How will Dodgers replace Kiké Hernandez?

With their primary utility player no longer in the fold, the Dodgers figure to rely more on Chris Taylor to fill that role. He is accustomed to playing multiple positions, though last year primarily spent time at shortstop (20 games), left field (19) and second base (13).

The Dodgers hope to have Gavin Lux take hold of second base this season, which would free up Taylor to continue moving around the field. However, if he is needed up the middle, the Dodgers then may need to turn to rookie Zach McKinstry as a replacement for Hernandez.
