Friday marked one year since former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda passed away at 93. He had been in poor health since traveling to Texas to watch the Dodgers win their first World Series since his club did so in 1988.

Shortly after returning to California, Lasorda was admitted to intensive care. He was then moved to a rehab center and remained there for several weeks. Lasorda had hoped to be released in time for Christmas, and narrowly missed that target.

Lasorda’s legacy has been celebrated at various points over the past year, and on Friday it included Bobby Valentine remembering how unique his close friend was.

The Hall of Fame manager led the Dodgers to four National League pennants, two World Series and finished with a 1,599-1,439 record.

He was named National League Manager of the Year in both 1983 and 1988, and maintained ties to the organization as either a player, coach, scout, manager, executive or special advisor for 71 years.

At the time of Lasorda’s passing, Justin Turner, Orel Hershiser, Max Muncy and several others with the Dodgers organization reflected fondly on memorable exchanges they had with the fiery skipper.

Dodgers cite Lasorda

When MLB owners imposed a lockout last month, the Dodgers cited Lasorda in a message to fans.

“As Tommy Lasorda often said, you are the greatest fans in the world, and we are very grateful for the loyalty and support that you have shown the Dodgers and our beloved game of baseball throughout the years,” a portion of the team’s statement read.

“We hope that you and your loved ones are enjoying the holiday season, and we wish you the best for the coming New Year. Next season promises to be a memorable one, especially with the 2022 Major League Baseball All-Star Game being played at Dodger Stadium in July.”
