The Arizona Diamondbacks claimed Reyes Moronta off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The announcement was made Monday night, hours after the Dodgers activated Brusdar Graterol off the 15-day injured list.
Moronta was designated for assignment as the corresponding move to Dustin May returning from the 60-day IL. He pitched to a 4.18 ERA, 5.11 FIP and 1.14 WHIP over 22 games for the Dodgers.
Moronta went 1-0 with two saves, a 2.70 ERA and 1.70 WHIP across 11 appearances with Triple-A Oklahoma City. Had Moronta cleared waivers, it’s possible he could have remained with the Dodgers organization by accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Instead, his career in the National League West will continue.
Moronta made his MLB debut with the San Francisco Giants in 2017 but only appeared in seven games. He assumed a larger role the following year and had his most successful season to date by going 5-2 with one save, a 2.49 ERA and 1.09 WHIP across 69 appearances.
Moronta experienced some regression in 2019, but still pitched in 56 games and proved to be an effective option out of the bullpen for the Giants. After missing all of the 2020 season while recovering from labrum surgery in his right shoulder, Moronta was on the Giants’ Opening Day for 2021.
However, he only appeared in four games before being placed on the 10-day IL due to a right elbow flexor strain. Moronta resumed throwing near the end of April but began to experience right forearm stiffness roughly one week later. He was diagnosed with a mild sprained ligament that wound up sidelining him into August.
Moronta didn’t appear in any games for the Giants after activated from the 60-day IL and was sent outright to the Minors upon being designated for assignment and clearing waivers. He later signed with the Dodgers and was among their non-roster invitees to 2022 Spring Training.

In parts of five seasons at the Major League level, Moronta is 8-9 with one save, a 2.88 ERA, 3.69 FIP and 1.17 WHIP over 158 games.
