The Los Angeles Dodgers’ Opening Day roster for the Tokyo Series features 12 pitchers, a two-way player in Shohei Ohtani and 13 additional position players.
Despite manager Dave Roberts saying Mookie Betts would not play against the Chicago Cubs, he was included on their Opening Day roster. The Dodgers are hopeful Betts will recover from a lingering illness to play in the Dodger Stadium opener on March 27, which explains why he wasn’t placed on the injured list.
So too was James Outman despite Andy Pages seemingly holding the edge to take on the starting role in center field. Outman’s inclusion comes at the expense of an additional relief pitcher.
There otherwise aren’t any surprises on the pitching side of the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster. Spring Training non-roster invitee Luis Garcia received a nod amid a rash if injuries in the bullpen.
Brusdar Graterol (right shoulder surgery) and Michael Grove (right shoulder surgery) were placed on the 60-day injured list to make room on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster to select the contracts of Garcia and Roki Sasaki.
Tony Gonsolin (15-day, back tightness), Edgardo Henriquez (15-day, left foot fracture), Kyle Hurt (15-day, right elbow surgery), Clayton Kershaw (15-day IL, left toe and left knee surgeries), Michael Kopech (15-day, right shoulder impingement), Evan Phillips (15-day, right rotator cuff strain) and Emmett Sheehan (15-day, right elbow surgery) began the season on the injured list as well.
Dustin May, Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow occupy the three exempt roster spots the Dodgers were afforded due to beginning the season overseas.
