The Los Angeles Dodgers lost Justin Turner to the disabled list on Friday afternoon and saw Yasiel Puig removed early, but behind a strong showing from Alex Wood and sufficient offense, beat the Miami Marlins. There was also a scrum between the two teams, which led to three ejections.
Wood carried a shut out into the eighth inning, scattering six hits and striking out four. He was aided by the Dodgers turning three double plays behind him.
Los Angeles once again jumped to an early lead, loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the first. Austin Barnes’ swinging bunt pushed a run across before Justin nicolino could get out of the inning.
Chris Taylor led off the bottom of the third with a home run, extending the Dodgers’ lead to 2-0. Corey Seager followed with a double, and he later scored on Kiké Hernandez’s base hit to center field.
Puig grabbed at his back on a check swing during a plate appearance that ended in a walk. He was checked on by a trainer but remained in the game. Puig wasn’t forced to exert himself or spend much time on the bases, as Brett Eibner hit a home run.
Puig was replaced by Joc Pederson to start the fifth, which moved Eibner over to right field. Wood retired the side in order in the seventh inning, though ran into some trouble in the eighth.
Tyler Moore and Dee Gordon combined for back-to-back singles to put two on with nobody out. Christian Yelich lined out, and that was it for Wood.
Ross Stripling preserved the Dodgers’ shutout by inducing Marcell Ozuna into an inning-ending double play. Cody Bellinger’s two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth pushed the Dodgers’ lead to 7-0.
Bellinger’s eighth home run of the season tied him with Puig. Following the home run, Eibner was hit by a pitch, setting a prelude for benches clearing in the ninth. Stripling immediately threw behind Giancarlo Stanton and was ejected.
Benches cleared, with Marlins manager Don Mattingly and Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren at the center of it and nose to nose. Geren and Mattingly were also ejected.
Chris Hatcher came on in relief and lost the shut out bid as he surrendered a solo home run to Justin Bour. The homer was Bour’s second in as many games. A sacrifice fly trimmed the Dodgers’ lead to 7-2 before Hatcher could finish out the game.
Taylor finished the night 3-for-4 and a triple shy of the cycle.
