The Los Angeles Dodgers traded Jose Requena to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Alek Thomas. Michael Siani was designated for assignment in order to make room for Thomas on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.
The 26-year-old had been DFA’d by the Diamondbacks on May 8 in a corresponding move to the team calling up top prospect Ryan Waldschmidt. The roster move effectively swapped out a former top outfield prospect for a current one.
Thomas hit just .181/.222/.340 with nine doubles, two home runs and 10 RBI over 28 games for Arizona this season. Thomas made his MLB debut in 2022 and has been up with the Diamondbacks for at leasts parts of five seasons.
Thomas was part of the Diamondbacks team that swept the Dodgers in the 2023 National League Division Series. He started in all three games and hit safely in two of them. That included going 2-for-4 in Game 3.
He’s yet to find much consistent success at the plate during that time, which has included never exceeding nine home runs or having a wRC+ above 81 in any season. Moreover, Thomas had a career-worst 26% strikeout rate last year and it is at 23% so far this year.
Thomas is being sent to Triple-A Oklahoma City for the time being. He’s out of Minor League options and would need to be DFA’d if the Dodgers added him onto their active roster and eventually looked to make a change.
The Dodgers are assuming roughly $1.4 million in salary still owed to Thomas, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. He avoided arbitration with the Diamondbacks by agreeing to a one-year, $1.9625 million contract. Thomas remains arbitration-eligible through the 2028 season.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers are cutting ties with Siani once again since first acquiring him via waivers in the middle of December. Siani was designated him for assignment one month later to make room for Kyle Tucker on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster.
The New York Yankees proceeded to claim Siani off waivers, but it wasn’t long until he was DFA’d a third time in the offseason as they acquired Angel Chivili from the Colorado Rockies. The Dodgers then reclaimed Siani off waivers and he had remained part the organization since that point.
Siani hit .225/.355/.303 with five doubles, one triple and 10 RBI over 29 games for the Comets this year.
Who did Dodgers trade for Alek Thomas?
Requena was signed by the Dodgers on Jan. 15, 2026, as an international free agent out of Caracas, Venezuela. The 17-year-old outfielder didn’t appear in a professional game for the Dodgers prior to getting traded.
