The Los Angeles Dodgers made the signing of Louis Coleman to a one-year contract official on Friday, and in doing so, placed Brandon McCarthy on the 60-day disabled list.

McCarthy is currently recovering from last May’s Tommy John surgery, and isn’t eligible to be reinstated from the DL until June 2. Signed to a four-year, $48 million contract in December 2014, McCarthy managed to make four starts last season before undergoing the season-ending surgery.

He finished the shortened year 3-0 with a 5.87 ERA, 6.22 FIP, 1.22 WHIP and averaging 11.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

McCarthy’s rough and conservative timetable projects for him to return with the Dodgers at the 2016 All-Star break. However, the right-hander recently stated he was hopeful to get back on the mound prior to that.

“I would like to be back before the All-Star break,” McCarthy said. “My ultimate goal is to make a start or two before the All-Star break. If it doesn’t happen that’s fine, I’m mentally prepared for that. I want to use that as our foundation of, ‘This is where I need to get to.’”

McCarthy has progressed without any setbacks and is expected to begin “regular mound work” with the intensity of his workouts increasing throughout Spring Training. Without McCarthy, the Dodgers’ starting rotation features just one right-hander in Japanese native Kenta Maeda.
