UPDATE (Jan. 28, 2:05 p.m. PT): Los Angeles City councilman Gil Cedillo will make the motion to rename Elysian Park Avenue to Vin Scully Avenue for vote during Friday’s City Council meeting.
“There’s no better way to recognize such an iconic Dodger as Hall of Famer Vin Scully than naming a street after him,” Dodgers president and CEO Stan Kasten said.
“We appreciate Gil Cedillo and city officials bringing this to the forefront and we look forward to the day when everyone can drive on Vin Scully Avenue when they enter Dodger Stadium.”
Clayton Kershaw and Yasiel Puig will be among the several Dodgers attending the City Hall meeting.
Vin Scully’s announcement that he would return for a 67th season with the Los Angeles Dodgers was met with mixed emotions as he also revealed 2016 will be his final year in the booth.
The revered voice of the Dodgers was recently named the recipient for two best play-by-play awards — in radio and television — at the 25th annual Southern California Sports Broadcasters Awards.
Scully will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Los Angeles Sports Council on Feb. 25.
Meanwhile, if Los Angeles City Council member Gilbert Cedillo has his way, Scully will be further honored by having a portion of Elysian Park Avenue named after him.
Cedillo filed a motion for the change on Tuesday, some of which is included below:
Scully currently calls most Dodger home games (and selected road games). He is known for his dulcet voice, lyrically descriptive style, and signature introduction to Dodger games: “It’s time for Dodger baseball! Hi, everybody, and a very pleasant good (day/evening) to you, wherever you may be.”
The Dodgers announced on August 28, 2015 that Scully would be back for the 2016 season, his 67th with the Dodgers. At a press conference August 29, Scully said 2016 would probably be his final year.
In light of Vin Scully’s remarkable and unprecedented career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, it is appropriate that the name of a portion of Elysian Park Avenue from Sunset Boulevard to Dodger Stadium Way be legally changed to “Vin Scully Avenue.”
I THEREFORE MOVE that the City Engineer be directed to begin the process of changing the name of Elysian Park Avenue from Sunset Boulevard to Dodger Stadium Way to “Vin Scully Avenue.
Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti proposed a similar honor in 2013, to which Scully politely declined and deemed unnecessary.
The city previously did the same for former Los Angeles Lakers announcer Chick Hearn by naming the portion of West 11th Street between Figueroa Street and Georgia Street (now L.A. Live Way) to Chick Hearn Court in 2002.
